What are You Worth?
Leviticus 9:7 (The Message)
Moses instructed Aaron, "Approach the Altar and sacrifice your Absolution-Offering and your Whole-Burnt-Offering. Make atonement for yourself and for the people. Sacrifice the offering that is for the people and make atonement for them, just as God commanded."
Notes: We again see instructions from the Old Testament regarding the offering of sacrifices for the sins of the people. There were many types of offers to make. Here we see the whole-burnt-offering and the absolution-offering. The priest had to make atonement for themselves as well as the people. This sacrifice must be done just as God commanded or it would not be valid.
Question: What does atonement mean?
Answer: The word atonement carries with it the idea of the just, holy, righteous side of God's nature being satisfied. God's law required death as the penalty for sin. When God saw the death of the innocent sacrifice, he was satisfied that the demands of his law had been carried out. Sacrificing an animal on an altar did not take away the sin. Man was still sinful. The sacrifice only pictured what was necessary for sin to be forgiven — death and shedding of blood. The blood provided an atonement or covering for sin. And this atonement had to be done God's way or it was not acceptable. This means that you and I cannot come to God just any way we want like the world tells us. There are not many paths to the true God. There is only one way and that way is through his Son Jesus Christ. Also, Jesus' blood was able to eliminate all the many offerings that had to be made for the forgiveness of sins. Now there was only one sacrifice. Once and for all!
Prayer: God we thank you for the living sacrifice of your son, Jesus. He came to give his life for us. We thank you for salvation and forgiveness. Jesus was able to do what no animal could. His blood forgives forever. Thank you.
