How do I Become a Disciple?
Luke 11:1-3 (The Message)
One day he was praying in a certain place. When he finished, one of his disciples said, "Master, teach us to pray just as John taught his disciples." So he said, "When you pray, say, Father, Reveal who you are. Set the world right. Keep us alive with three square meals. Keep us forgiven with you and forgiving others. Keep us safe from ourselves and the Devil."
Notes: Jesus' disciples saw him praying and asked him when he was finished to teach them to pray. Jesus teaches them what we have come to know as the "Our Father" prayer.
Question: Why do you think Jesus did not reject them, but teach them instead?
Answer: Jesus taught them because he wanted them to know what was right. He did not expect them to "just know" what to do, instead he was willing to show them what to do. It isn't that they must pray these exact words, but it is the an example of showing how to praise God first before asking, then to pray for his will to be done, for your spiritual safety and needs and then for our relationship with others. Today, Jesus still wants his disciples to be equipped for the journey. God wants to teach you to pray so that you will know what the will of the father is.
Prayer: Lord, teach us to pray so that we can be your disciples. Help us so that we can be equipped for the mission that you have set before us. Thank you for caring enough about us that you will teach us your ways.
